Franklin Templeton created the Canadian ETF Proficiency Course to help advisors enhance their ETF knowledge and training. This free course can help you meet the Mutual Fund Dealers Association (MFDA) proficiency criteria for selling ETFs. Also, you can take the course for Continuing Education (CE) credits.
The online course is made up of five individual modules that, together, meet the criteria of MFDA Policy No. 8: Proficiency Standard for Approved Persons selling Exchange Traded Funds.

The total duration of the course is approximately 2.5 hours. A mandatory final assessment includes 30 questions, with 65% as the minimum passing score. Upon successful completion, you will be able to download a certificate immediately.
The Franklin Templeton Canadian ETF Proficiency Course is available in English and French.
Syllabus
MODULE 1
Introduction & Requirements

This first lesson defines exchange traded funds and compares them to conventional mutual funds and stocks. This also covers registration and licensing requirements for Dealing Representatives, and which types of ETFs can be sold by them.
MODULE 2
Regulations of ETF
15 min
This second lesson describes the regulations of ETFs in Canada, including the offering documents, disclosure requirements, investment restrictions, and the role of the Independent Review Committee.
MODULE 3
Characteristics of ETFs
45 min
This third lesson will discuss different ETF investment management styles; the creation and redemption of units; and operating costs. This also explores the features and benefits of ETFs along with some general risks. Finally, it will compare ETFs and other investment vehicles.
MODULE 4
Exchange Trading

This lesson explores concepts related to trading ETFs on exchanges such as the NEO Exchange (NEO) and Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX); order processing; distributions; and Universal Market Integrity Rules (UMIR)
MODULE 5
Investing in ETFs
20 min
This lesson looks at investing in ETFs and explores concepts like client obligations, portfolio management, and various parties involved in the investment process.
Earn MFDA ETF Proficiency
For registrants interested in taking this course to acquire the MFDA proficiency to sell ETFs, you must first confirm approval with your Dealer.

Earn CE Credits
This course is approved for 2.5 credits by IIROC and MFDA. CSF credits are pending.
